The Best Coworking Space in Madrid for Freelancers? Here's Why Freelancers Keep Choosing Area
If you freelance in Madrid, you already know the drill: working from home sounds great until it doesn't, café WiFi is a gamble, and most coworking spaces feel like they were designed for a tech startup in 2014 rather than an actual human being.
There's another problem too. A lot of coworking spaces in Madrid — and across the world, frankly — have quietly pivoted away from freelancers altogether. The money is in corporate accounts, team plans, and private offices for twenty people. Individual freelancers don't move the needle for them. So the spaces get bigger, the vibes get more corporate, and the person working alone on their laptop starts to feel a bit like an afterthought.
We're Area, a coworking space in the heart of Delicias, Arganzuela — and we've gone in the opposite direction. Nearly all of our members are freelancers and independent workers: designers, writers, developers, consultants, photographers, lawyers, translators. People who chose to work for themselves and want a space that reflects that. Here's what we think makes the difference.
You're not a desk number here
Most large coworking spaces in Madrid operate at scale. That's fine — but it means you sign up online, swipe in, sit down, and nobody really knows your name. Area is deliberately different. We cap membership at 60 desks, which means the people working here get to know each other, and so do we. For freelancers, that's not a small thing. Some of our best member relationships have started with a coffee in the kitchen.
When almost everyone in a space is an independent worker, something different happens. There's a mutual respect, a shared understanding of what that life is actually like, and a natural generosity with knowledge and contacts. Our members refer work to each other, collaborate on projects, and occasionally just commiserate over a coffee about a difficult client. That's the community we've built — not by design so much as by choosing to stay small and stay focused on individuals.
Delicias is an underrated gem for coworking in Madrid
There's a reason more and more people are choosing to work in Arganzuela. Delicias is well-connected — we're 3 minutes from Delicias metro station and a short walk from Atocha — but without the noise and premium prices of the city centre. The neighbourhood has its own character: the Museo del Ferrocarril is right nearby, the streets are calmer, lunch spots are actually affordable, and you can cycle in without much stress.
When you're a freelancer, the neighbourhood you work in matters. You want to be able to step outside and feel like a person, not just a commuter.
The space itself makes a difference
We converted an old industrial warehouse in Delicias — the kind with high ceilings, concrete floors, and big windows that flood the place with natural light. Architects Aleatoria helped us lean into the original aesthetic rather than sand it down into something generic. The result is a workspace in Madrid that looks and feels genuinely different.
We've got plants everywhere (including a full-grown tree in the events hall), handmade desks at 120x60cm, a smoothie machine, quality coffee, showers if you cycle in, and phone cabins for calls. The coworking passes — flexible or fixed — include all of that, plus meeting room credit, printing, and a private locker.
Flexibility that actually fits how freelancers work
One of the most common things we hear from freelancers is that other coworking spaces in Madrid lock them into contracts or packages that don't suit the reality of freelance life — which can be feast or famine, and often means you don't need a desk every single day.
We offer day passes (22€), 5-day bundles (90€), 10-day bundles (145€), half-day plans, and full monthly memberships for floating or fixed desks. So whether you're going through a quiet month or a full-on sprint, there's always an option that makes sense financially.
Come and try it
If you're freelancing in Madrid and looking for a coworking space that feels like a real home base — in a neighbourhood worth being in, with a community worth joining — come and try a free day with us. We think you'll like it.
