Coworking Etiquette...

Coworking spaces have their own distinct personality and at Area we do not have many strict rules. However, they become a much more pleasant place to work when everyone adheres to certain community norms.

Coworking etiquette is not something most of us have been formally taught., and in general it usually comes down to common sense! The golden rule is to be considerate and respectful, considering how your actions will make others feel. Here are some universal guidelines on what a coworker should and shouldn't do:

  1. Manage your noise level.

It's clear that a coworking space won't be as quiet as a private office, as you'll always be surrounded by people. You need to learn to isolate yourself from distractions, for example, by listening to white noise or your favorite music. However, every coworker should control their noise level to avoid disturbing others. When you need to make a call, you can use a phone box or a meeting room. If you're talking to someone, lower your voice or do it in a café. If everyone tries to keep noise to a minimum in the common work areas, the space will be more comfortable to work in.

2. Use shared spaces respectfully.

Remember that in a coworking space, you're never alone, and you must respect others' space. Everyone has the right to use shared services like photocopiers, printers, and meeting rooms. If you need to print 200 pages, ask others if they need to use the printer first. Don't change the heating or air conditioning settings without consulting other coworkers, or ask Hugo or Jack if it can be changed. Leave the space as you found it - including bathrooms and the kitchen area.
If you don't want to delay your colleagues' plans, remember that time management is crucial when booking a meeting room in a shared workspace. Pay special attention to the kitchen, as it is one of the most popular areas in every coworking space and a source of the worst etiquette violations! Wash your dirty dishes after eating, organize the fridge, and avoid strongly smelling food.

3. Be social at the right times.

Coworking spaces are designed to promote networking and community relationships. Being friendly is essential so you can expand your network and find opportunities for new collaborations. You should be open to new projects and participate in events, talks, and workshops organized in your space. However, everyone sometimes needs a moment to focus on their work. Let your colleagues know when your focus times are, during which you're not available for chats and jokes, and respect others'.

4. Mind sustainability.

Whenever possible, try to save energy and resources. Both coworking managers and the environment will appreciate it. When you're away, turn off the light in your workspace or in a room. When you're not using your equipment, turn them off. Reduce paper consumption: think about how you could use files without printing them. If you have some printed pages, reuse them as drafts.
And most importantly of all, make sure to recycle! We have separate bins for food waste, paper, and plastic/metal recycling.

5. Try to solve things on your own before asking questions.

Before bothering someone, try to resolve things on your own. If you have a doubt or question, first look for the answer on the internet or around you. The Wi-Fi password is written on signs by the walls for example, but always feel free to ask Hugo or Jack if you have any doubts :)

As you can see, being a courteous coworker is not difficult at all! You only need a small conscious effort to make your coworking space a pleasant place for everyone using it.
