Delicias, Madrid: The Local's Guide to Our Coworking Neighbourhood
Ask why Area chose Delicias over somewhere more obviously "cool" like Malasaña or Chueca, and the answer is simple: Delicias is real Madrid, and that's exactly what makes it a great place to work.
Area has been based here for a few years now, and it remains one of the most underrated corners of the city. Here's an honest, no-fluff guide to the neighbourhood — for anyone thinking about joining, or just passing through.
Where even is Delicias?
Delicias sits in the Arganzuela district, just south of Atocha station. It's central enough to reach most of Madrid in a short walk or metro ride, but far enough from the tourist trail that it hasn't been polished into a theme-park version of itself. Working-class roots, a strong local community, and a slower pace than the centre — while still being a 20-minute walk from Atocha and 3 minutes from Delicias metro station (Line 3).
What to do around here
Museo del Ferrocarril (Railway Museum) — the old train station turned museum gives the neighbourhood part of its identity, just around the corner from Area. Even for those not into trains, the building itself is worth a look.
Madrid Río — a short walk leads to the riverside park running along the Manzanares. Great for a lunchtime walk between meetings, or a run before the day starts.
Local markets and bakeries — Delicias hasn't been taken over by chains the way some central neighbourhoods have. There are still proper neighbourhood bakeries, fruterías and small bars where the owner remembers your order.

Matadero Madrid — a bit further south, this old slaughterhouse turned cultural centre hosts exhibitions, film screenings and events. Worth the walk on a weekend.
Why it works for remote workers and freelancers
A neighbourhood doesn't need to be trendy to be good for work — it needs to be liveable. Delicias has affordable, decent food nearby (important when working from a space all day), it's quiet enough to avoid fighting tourist crowds to get anywhere, and the transport links mean clients or collaborators from other parts of the city can arrive easily.
It's also just... normal. Members work alongside people who actually live in the area, not just other coworking members passing through. That mix is part of what makes the community at Area feel different from a corporate coworking chain.

Area is located at Calle Tomás Bretón 50-52, 28045 Madrid — 3 minutes from Delicias metro (Line 3), 20 minutes' walk from Atocha, and well connected by bus for those coming from further out.
